With 9.2 million Australian households shopping online, it’s evident the pandemic has changed the way we shop, and new habits formed over the past two years are now frmly ingrained. Aussie shoppers spent an incredible $62.3 billion on online physical goods in 2021. This represents a 19.3% share of total retail sales, with that figure continuing to grow steadily year-on-year. But with this massive surge of online business, the problems are now more apparent than ever.
Almost six in 10 (58%) Australians worry their parcels could be stolen in their absence and 41% believe they are not provided enough delivery options to ensure security, according to new research by Hubbed. - And a whopping 17% of Australians have experienced parcel theft, according to a recent study by Nest.
Nearly half (45%) admitted they do not have a safe spot outside their home for parcel deliveries. To ensure the security of their items, almost one-quarter (23%) of respondents said they request signature on delivery or re-delivery to the post office. Almost a fifth (18%) choose to have some parcels delivered directly to their post office.
A recent ABS survey revealed that Australians are feeling increasingly time-poor, with 45% of females and 36% of males feeling “pressed for time”. Buyers of goods from both online and physical stores, ultimately face the same issue of “taking actual delivery of their purchases”.
Along with the massive surge of online ecommerce deliveries, orders for perishable goods such as food delivered by Ubereats and local supermarkets have also skyrocketed - and with this comes the issues of food being left outside, in an uncontrolled temperature environment, leading to food spoilage and waste.
